It’s a fairly old article that I only recently stumbled upon, because I’m greatly enjoying reading through Scott Alexander’s backlog in a random fashion.1 In this one, he postulates basically the super platonic federalism.
It’s a thought experiment, so I rather forgive the idealism he treats the people in the central government with. I also have my doubts about the individual islands actually living at peace with one another; in addition to the human desire to separate out the “Other” comes the desire to denigrate and even perpetrate violence against the “Other”.
That all said, since reading this, I’ve found myself contemplating what my island would be. I also have been contemplating what Christians are called to do in the light of the increasingly fractured culture we find ourselves in. I’m not sure it is amenable to the archipelago.
